I begin this new school year with great excitement and enthusiasm. Last year, we examined our educational practices throughout the school, making note of changes that could be made to enhance the educational opportunities for your children. This year, we begin the implementation of those changes.

The first change you will notice is the change in the schedule of classes. Core classes have been lengthened to 60 minutes to enable us to bring literacy into all the content areas. We will also be transitioning to the new common core standards and the new lessons reflecting the changes. We have added Spanish to the elective rotation and there will be expanded use of the STEM lab for all grades and the hiring of personnel to assist teachers with this endeavor is the last major educational change for this year.

School culture will be addressed by our adoption of the respective community program and it’s O’Maley SAILS initiative. You will be seeing our new logo and receiving information about this new initiative.

Our administration has had some changes as well. Kevin McCormack, our grade eight assistant principal, has moved on and will not be replaced. Sara Hoomis will become the grade eight assistant principal. Craig Hovey will remain grade seven assistant principal. Grade six will be divided, Ms. Hoomis will continue as assistant principal for Island House, Mr. Hovey will serve as assistant principal for Branch House and I will be the contact for Harbor House.

As with last year, we hope to continue to build a database of parent emails so that I can send a weekly update of O’Maley events and notices. Please email omaley.office@gloucester.k12.ma.us to join. For those who do not have computer access, we will have hard copies of the email available in the office each Friday.

I hope that each of you has enjoyed a summer filled with family and friends and that you will return to school with renewed energies and enthusiasm. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, feedback or suggestions.

Here’s to a wonderful school year!
Sincerely,

Debra Lucey
